Hello Folks,

I want to flag here a very important Fund Raising Event next Saturday that has a direct impact on our aspiring youth talent in the Grand River Region.

The Grand River Society was unsuccessful in obtaining a grant to help our Blues Youth Camp this Summer. For more details on the Blues Youth Camp please click here:

Last year's Youth Camp was so successful and the Society received many written thanks from appreciative parents. Campers can register at the above link too.

With the much needed support of Tri-City Music, they are producing a Special Youth Event being held at the Gig Music Hall called "THE TALENTED" on Saturday June 27th. The Event will raise much needed funds for The Grand River Blues Youth Camp and our continuing Blues in Schools Programs. Please help your Society by lending your support for a very worthy cause. The Region has lost it's Blues Legend Mel Brown. As a blues society that both supported Mel, and was supported by Mel, it seems appropriate that we somehow pay tribute to his time with us here on the banks of the Grand River.
We are planning a special Mel Brown Tribute Edition of our regular newsletter, and would like it to be a compilation of thoughts, anecdotes, photos and facts about this outstanding blues legend. We are extending an invitation to all of our members to submit an article, story or photo for inclusion in this special tribute to Mel Brown, that will be put out before the Kitchener Blues Festival in August. While we know we can't include everything submitted in the newsletter, we hope to publish all submissions on our Grand River Blues Society website, in a special Mel Brown Tribute section.
If you have a story, photo or just some thoughts about Mel and his contribution to the local blues scene that you would like to share, please consider sending them in to us for this special edition Newsletter.

WHO: Six of Canada’s newest emerging artists!

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Friday, June 19th, 2009, 5pm

The Toronto Blues Society invites Canadian blues acts who have not made a third party (major or indie label) recording to enter the Toronto Blues Society Talent Search.

The winning act will receive a professional development package including a performance at the Southside Shuffle in September, a showcase performance and passes to the Blues Summit V in January 2011, studio time at Euphonic Sound in Toronto, a photo shoot with Bill King, a quarter page ad in the MapleBlues Newsletter, and a Mentoring session with music industry professionals.

Now in its fourteenth year, this event has proved a launching pad for outstanding emerging talent - previous winners include JUNO and Maple Blues Award nominee the Rockin' Highliners, New Artist of the Year nominees Jake and the Blue Midnights, Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards winners the Ronnie Douglas Blues Band, CBC/Galaxie Rising Star David Rotundo, and Maple Blues Award nominees Wickens-Knight.

For the 2009 edition, a screening panel will choose six acts, each of whom will perform one live showcase set in the finals at Nathan Phillips Square on Thursday, August 13th.

To enter: Send a CD with three songs (material must have been recorded within the past two years.)

Recording must be clearly labeled and include a bio (200 words max), photo, and contact information, including mailing address and phone number. Enclose entry fee of $15 (cheques payable to the Toronto Blues Society. Please don’t send cash), and mail to:

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of one of the
truly legendary figures in music, the Queen of the Blues, Koko Taylor. Koko
had surgery May 19 for some ongoing gastro-intestinal issues and developed
an infection that ultimately could not be contained. This morning we were
told she'd taken a turn for the worse overnight. She passed away around
3:15pm today.
Born a sharecropper's daughter in Shelby County, Tennessee, Koko boarded a
bus to Chicago in 1954 as part of the great migration of southern blacks
to the urban centers of the north. For years she worked as a housecleaner
until Willie Dixon discovered her in 1963 sitting in with a band at a South
Side nightclub. She had an R&B hit with Dixon's Wang Dang Doodle in 1966
and was one of the first Chicago blues artists to work the white clubs on
the city's North Side.
She signed with Alligator in 1975 and received Grammy nominations for
eight of her nine Alligator albums (she won a Grammy in 1984 for the live
multi-artist album Blues Explosion on Atlantic Records). She won a record 29
Blues Music Awards (the Grammy of the blues world) and in 1999 was inducted
into the Blues Foundation’s Hall Of Fame. “There are many kings of the blues,
” said The Boston Globe, “but only one queen.”
Koko's last release, 2007's Old School, was a fiery return to the gritty
blues she sang upon first arriving in the Windy City. She was the
modern-day version of female blues trailblazers like Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie and as such influenced generations of artists from Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt to Susan Tedeschi and Shemekia Copeland. Our deepest sympathies go
out to Koko's family and blues lovers everywhere.

The Region has lost it's Blues Legend Mel Brown. As a blues society that both supported Mel, and was supported by Mel, it seems appropriate that we somehow pay tribute to his time with us here on the banks of the Grand River.
We are planning a special Mel Brown Tribute Edition of our regular newsletter, and would like it to be a compilation of thoughts, anecdotes, photos and facts about this outstanding blues legend. We are extending an invitation to all of our members to submit an article, story or photo for inclusion in this special tribute to Mel Brown, that will be put out before the Kitchener Blues Festival in August. While we know we can't include everything submitted in the newsletter, we hope to publish all submissions on our Grand River Blues Society website, in a special Mel Brown Tribute section.

The Toronto Blues Society invites Canadian blues acts who have not made a third party (major or indie label) recording to enter the Toronto Blues Society Talent Search.

The winning act will receive a professional development package including a performance at the Southside Shuffle in September, a showcase performance and passes to the Blues Summit V in January 2011, studio time at Euphonic Sound in Toronto, a photo shoot with Bill King, a quarter page ad in the MapleBlues Newsletter, and a Mentoring session with music industry professionals.

Now in its fourteenth year, this event has proved a launching pad for outstanding emerging talent - previous winners include JUNO and Maple Blues Award nominee the Rockin' Highliners, New Artist of the Year nominees Jake and the Blue Midnights, Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards winners the Ronnie Douglas Blues Band, CBC/Galaxie Rising Star David Rotundo, and Maple Blues Award nominees Wickens-Knight.

For the 2009 edition, a screening panel will choose six acts, each of whom will perform one live showcase set in the finals at Nathan Phillips Square on Thursday, August 13^th.

To enter: Send a CD with three songs (material must have been recorded within the past two years.)

    It is a sad situation indeed. You know, I have always encouraged all of you to support the Blues Musicians and Blues Venues. What I haven't done enough is ask you to Support Blues Radio. In the last six months our region has lost 3 Blues Radio Shows that are listed here weekly. If you are wondering who are gone, well in order of disappearance are THE REAL BLUES HOURS 100.3 CKRZ, SUNDAY NIGHT SOUL AM 1430 and BLUEWATER BLUES CFBW 91.3. It's not that the Radio Host Volunteers ( I strees, Volunteers) have given up for they want to do their Shows and I know folks want to listen to them. When a Radio Station does a Fund Raising Drive, it's serious business. Those funds are the "life blood" of the Blues Radio Shows. Advertising is sparce or non-exsistant on these Shows which causes the Station to pull the plug on the Volunteer Host's and your Blues passion. Please help support your Blues Radio Shows with pledges, donations and advertising or at least support the folks that advertise on these Blues Shows or you and The Blues will loose this meaningful experience.

The Region has lost it's blues legend Mel Brown. As a blues society that both supported Mel, and was supported by Mel, it seems appropriate that we somehow pay tribute to his time with us here on the banks of the Grand River.
We are planning a special Mel Brown Tribute Edition of our regular newsletter, and would like it to be a compilation of thoughts, anecdotes, photos and facts about this outstanding blues legend. We are extending an invitation to all of our members to submit an article, story or photo for inclusion in this special tribute to Mel Brown, that will be put out before the Kitchener Blues Festival in August. While we know we can't include everything submitted in the newsletter, we hope to publish all submissions on our Grand River Blues Society website, in a special Mel Brown Tribute section.
If you have a story, photo or just some thoughts about Mel and his contribution to the local blues scene that you would like to share, please consider sending them in to us for this special edition Newsletter.

Hello Folks,

It's really overdue but The Grand River Blues Society wants to extend our most sincere CONGRATULATIONS TO "JUNO JULIAN" FAUTH.

Julian says it best from his weekly email letter sent to me by John Allen. I'll share a portion of his letter with you below.

"Thank You

Until Mar 27th I had an unblemished record of being nominated for awards and strenuously avoiding winning any. But everybody has a lapse sometimes, and this year I have ruined my perfect record by winning the 2009 Juno Award for Best Blues Album

for "Ramblin' Son" (Electro-fi). I was dumbstruck; I would have bet any money that I wasn't going to win. I was so sure that I went to Montreal instead!

So I'd like to take this opportunity to thank many people that made this possible."

Julian listed many folks but had this to say about his fans and Mel Brown.

"All the friends and folks who have come to the bars that I played at over the years and have supported me."

"The great musician and friend Mel Brown, whose jams at Pop the Gator in Kitchener I used to attend regularly. Without Mel's encouragement, I probably wouldn't have considered playing music in public for a living. I'm one of the people Mel touched and I miss him very much."

"Now it's back to work."

Good Bye to our gentle man. You may be gone but you touched so many of our hearts you will never be forgotten Mel..

We all know how difficult this must be for family and friends and sweet Miss Angel. You are all in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

1939 – Born October 7th in Jackson, Mississippi into a musical family. His grandfather was a fiddle and guitar player during the early 1900’s. Mel’s father John Henry "Bubba" Brown, is cited by Mel as his major influence."He had perfect pitch and was a natural musician, music to him came as easily as walking to other people" Mel recalls.

The elder Brown played frequently with Tommy Johnson and the Chatmon Brothers, but due to the constraints of raising a family did not pursue music full time, becoming instead the first African American president of the local glass workers union. Music abounds in the Brown household with Mel, his brother James, and cousin Andrew, all receiving instruction from John Henry and the many delta legends who stopped by on their travels through Jackson.

1953 - Fourteen year old Mel contacts meningitis and is bedridden for several months. His father purchases him a Gibson Les Paul and a small amp. During his recuperation, he begins a serious study of the recorded work of B.B.King, Tal Farlow, Louis Jordan, Hank Williams and T-Bone Walker with the Les Paul in hand. "All of a sudden, everything just clicked", Mel remembers. "I could tell what B.B.King was doing, or what notes Tal Farlow was playing. Healthy once again, Mel joins "The Duke Juniors", a younger version of The Duke Huddleston Orchestra, Jackson’s most popular society band. He also made his way to Canton, Mississippi where he saw Elmore James, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Hank Ballard and The Midnighters and Sonny Boy Williamson. Mel ended up working several gigs with Sonny Boy in nearby Vaughn, Mississippi "He needed a guitar player, so he came by my house and got me".

1955 - Mel’s first trip to Los Angeles to check out the music scene. "Coming out of the South I was a little bit over my head then". "I’d been around cotton fields all my life, so when I heard a couple of guys who played so much better than me, I decided to go back to Mississippi and practice some more". Mel returned to Jackson where he continues woodshedding and rejoins the Huddleston Orchestra, he also plays briefly with the Joe Dyson Band.

1958 - Mel returns to Los Angeles and this time he is ready. Signing on with West Coast R&B artist Jimmy Beasley for a six month stretch, then stepping into Johnny Otis’ Band for two years of steady touring and recording work as well as appearances on Otis’ KTLA –TV show.

1960 – Mel leaves Johnny Otis to tour briefly with The Olympics riding high on the chart success of "Hully Gully". He next hooks up with blues diva Etta James for most of 1961 and 1962. At about this time Mel switches from the Les Paul to a hollow bodied Gibson ES-175, developing a fuller, more mellow tone uncommon at the time.

1963 – 1967 – Tiring of life on the road, Mel returns to L.A. where he once again rejoins Johnny Otis. This time in the house band at the hot spot Club Sands. Here Mel gets a chance to back artists such as Pee Wee Crayton, Johnny Guitar Watson, Billy Preston and Sam Cooke. At this juncture of his career Mel begins to work steadily in the highly competitive L.A. studio scene appearing on sessions with everyone from Bobby Darin to Doris Day, Bill Cosby to Jerry Lewis. Meanwhile back in the blues world, after impressing T-Bone Walker with his playing one night at the Sands Club, Walker invited Mel to appear on an album , "Funky Town", that he was preparing to record for the ABC/Impulse label . Also impressed with Mel’s guitar work on the T-Bone sessions, producer Bob Thiele summoned Mel back to the studio a week later to record his debut "Chicken Fat". The LP is a flavorsome mix of blues, jazz and funk instrumentals with special guest Herb Ellis along for the ride.

1968 – 1971 - Now signed to a major label in ABC/Impulse/Bluesway, Mel churns out a series of albums which are today highly prized collectibles. "The Wizard", "I’d Rather Suck My Thumb"," Blues For We", "Mel Brown’s Fifth", and "Big Foot Country Gal", as well as the best of collection "Eighteen Pounds of Unclean Chitlins", all showcased Mel’s superb guitar work with an occasional vocal outing. The "Fifth" LP also featured an appearance by Mel’s father on 747 Blues. Later in 1971, Mick Jagger asked Mel to introduce him to Bobby Blue Bland. Bland responded by asking Mel to join his band. Mel takes him up on the offer and works on and off with Bland through 1981. In addition to his own albums Mel , during this time, also appears on recordings by John Lee Hooker, Lightning Hopkins, Roy Brown, Earl Hooker, Charles Brown and B.B.King.

1973 - Mel appears on "The California Album" Bobby Blue Bland’s debut for the ABC label.

1976 – Seeking a break from the road, Mel moves to Nashville, where he is soon much in demand as a session player. He becomes part of the newly burgeoning "Outlaw" movement transforming Country music at the time, when he joins Tompall Glaser and his Outlaw Band and appears on their MGM LP.

1978 – Mel rejoins Bobby Blue Bland. In this incarnation of the band, Mel moves over to the piano bench and showcases his considerable piano and B3 skills.

1982 – Taking a well deserved break from music, Mel and Miss Angel move out to the country in Northeast Mississippi, 13 miles from the nearest phone.

1983 – Recharged, Mel accepts a long standing offer from Clifford Antone to join the house band at his renowned Austin, Texas club. Here Mel works with the cream of the blues world including Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Snooky Pryor, James Cotton and Clifton Chenier.

1986 – Albert Collins asks Mel to join The Icebreakers and appear with him on his Alligator LP "Cold Snap".

1987 – 1989 – Back at Antones, Mel continues his stellar work with the house band and in 1989 releases "If It’s All Night, It’s All Right" with The Silent Partners, Russel Jackson (Bass) and Tony Coleman (Drums), on the Antones label. Mel produces as well as contributing guitar, vocals and keyboards.

1990 – Booked into The Pop-The-Gator Club in Kitchener, Ontario four days before Christmas 1989, Mel decides to stay and explore life in Canada. "I like being where I’m not suppose to be" chuckles Mel. The Canadian blues community welcomes him with open arms.

1991 – 1997 – Mel perfects his golf game and builds up a circuit of club gigs in southern Ontario with his ace band "The Homewreckers" featuring John Lee on Keyboards, Miss Angel on vocals, Al Richardson bass and Jim Boudreau drums.

1998 – Mel appears on his old friend Snooky Pryor’s Electro-Fi debut "Can’t Stop Blowin".

1999 – Mel records his Electro-Fi debut "Neck Bones & Caviar".

2000 – Mel records a duo CD with Snooky Pryor for Electro-Fi entitled "Double Shot!".

2001 – "Neck Bones & Caviar" wins Mel the coveted W.C. Handy "Blues Comeback Album of the Year" award." Double Shot!", his CD with Snooky Pryor, is nominated for the W.C. Handy "Traditional Blues Album of the Year" award. Mel tours France in July, where "Neck Bones & Caviar" wins both the esteemed " Grand Prix De L’Academie Du Jazz " and Soul Bag magazine’s "Album of the Year" awards. Mel Brown and The Homewrecker’s first live CD "Homewreckin’ Done Live" is released worldwide October 23rd on Electro-Fi.

KITCHENER - The wife of legendary blues artist Mel Brown has released a statement on her husband's health.

In it, Miss Angel says the 69-year-old was taken off a ventilator this morning and is breathing on his own.

She says she can't thank people enough for their thoughts
and prayers.

Brown suffered from a collapsed lung and remains in critical condition at St. Mary's General Hospital in Kitchener.

He played and recorded with a long list of famous acts, including B-B King and David Bowie.

Brown was born in Jackson, Mississippi and moved to Kitchener in 1989 where he became one of the area's most popular musicians.

From Yesterday's Society Special Announcement Email

As you all know, Mel Brown has been in the hospital for a few weeks with an illness. He was hoping to be out for the Mavis Staples Show this Friday Night in Kitchener. He was looking forward to it so much to be able to perform on stage with Mavis. He was actually telling the nurses that he needed to get better to make this performance. He was so happy last summer that Mavis Staples was performing before him at the Kitchener Blues Festival and wanted to meet her. Mel had that opportunity to spend time with Mavis chatting with her in her trailer back stage.

Unfortunately, our great friend and Blues Legend's condition has taken a turn for the worse. We can only offer hope and our prayers for him and Miss Angel.

Julian Fauth, Mel's label mate from Electrofi Records has offered to perform in Mel's place for the opening set before the Mavis Staples Show on Friday night. Julian is a Juno nominated artist in 2009 and will do Mel proud. Providing guitar support during the show will be Kitchener's renowned Shawn Kellerman. Both of these fine musicians are proteges of Mel Brown and it's only fitting that they have stepped up to support Mel this way. They will be backed by Mel's band The Homewreckers .

Andrew Galloway, (President of Electrofi Records, Mel's record label) will be on hand that night selling Merchandise and donating all proceeds to Mel and Miss Angel . Also a portion of the proceeds from all tickets sold will be donated to Mel and Miss Angel in these tough times they are enduring.

Hello Folks,

So this morning I realized I've been focused on so many other matters that I actually haven't given any thought to what Blues Gigs and Venues I need to attend this and for the upcoming weeks to come? After a quick glance on what our Society's lovely and talented Paula forwarded to me, (I need help Folks, I can't do it all by myself, Thanks Paula) I realize it is going to be a tougher decision than I thought !

There are so many fantastic choices in the following menu of Gigs, Fund Raisers, Events and Special Appearances covering such a wide variety of different styles of Blues, Roots, R&B and Soul - - - I need to figure out a way to clone myself so I can attend them all !

Maybe I'll just close my eyes and see where my finger lands on the laptop screen trick? There will be no disappointment using that method for as I said earlier the variety here is amazing!
Hope to see you out there somewhere for if you are not there you are for sure gonna miss it.

CONOR GAINS BAND RETURNS TO CAFE 13
The band consists of Conor Gains on guitar and vocals, 15 year old Joel Goodwin on drums and veteran blues player, Lewis Leone, on bass guitar. Their performance will include several Conor Gains originals.

Tickets for the Conor Gains Band at Cafe 13 are now on sale at a cost of $10 each.

"I can promise the crowd a great show and they will leave happy and wanting more," says Gains.
